Joseph Golightly

Joseph Golightly was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1787. He married Abigail Smith, daughter of Charles Smith and Catherine Rhodes and they moved west about 1809 ultimately settling in Pope County, Illinois. They had children Harvey, Shands (m. Unknown, Mary Ann Armstrong, & Caroline Freeman), Hiram E. (m. Rebecca Glover – fought for the Confederacy), Elizabeth (m. William James), William (m. Bertha Vaughn), Joseph, Jr., James Washington (m. Cynthia Smith), and Charles (m. Huldah Couch).

Abigail’s father was said to be Charles Smith, born in Bull Run, Virginia 15 Jun 1742, son of Thomas Smith and Elizabeth Fleming, and married Catherine Rhodes about 1760. He worked in the Commissary Department during the Revolution due to poor eyesight and was deacon of the Philadelphia Baptist Church in Spartanburg, SC. He died 7 Apr 1824. DAR.org does in fact list a Charles Smith matching this information. Many are linked to Charles Smith by his son Elijah.

Joseph and Abigail deeded their land to their daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law William James in exchange for care in their old age. After Abigail’s death in 1846, Joseph lived with his son Shands until his death in 1856 at the age of 74. He was buried at Sycamore Plain Cemetery in Pope County, Illinois.
