Jesse Thomas Barks
Jesse was born 28 Jan 1835 near Marble Hill, Missouri, son of Jacob Barks and Ms. Deck. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War as a Private of Company D in the 81st Illinois Infantry according to the Illinois Veterans Index. He married Mary Elizabeth King 20 September 1856 in Madison County Missouri. And had children Thomas J., (m. Mary Kimble) John Burlin (m. Hulda Wallis), Edward Newton (m. Sarah Stevens/Stephens), Eva Mae (m. Franklin Ramsey), Ira Elmer (m. Columbia Rhodes), and Sarah Nettie (m. John Rhodes).
According to The Banner Press, published 30 Jul 1925, Jesse was known as Uncle Jess, a successful farmer who sold his farm to his son Ed Barks, and lived with his children, mostly with his daughter Sarah. He was said to have had a good memory, and that he would speak pleasantly about the early days of Bollinger County. He died 28 Jul 1925 at the age of 90.
